SPLITTING THE MORNING MEAL IN TWO

SEIF 3 If someone's morning meal stretches until Mincha time, he can split the meal in two in order to fulfill the Mitzvah of Shaalos Seudos. The Rosh explains that this it is advisable to do so, since if one were to eat a large meal, he might be too full to eat Shaalos Seudos at a later time. Rather, he should split up the meal and eat while he still has his appetite. (Sometimes a person can eat a large meal at one time, but waiting until later might ruin his appetite and he would be too full to eat another meal.)

EATING BEFORE OR AFTER MINCHA

Seif 2 (Contd.) Rabeinu Tam says that one should eat Shaalos Seudos before Mincha. The Medrish says that someone who drinks water Bein Hashmashes is stealing from the dead (who need the water to cool down before returning to Gehenim).

The Gra quotes a Rashba that brings a Yerushalmi which tells the story of someone who drank Bein Hashmashes and the Malach Hamaves killed him for it since he was stealing from the dead. Therefore one should eat before Mincha, otherwise he may eat and come to drink during Bein Hashmashes.

EATING PART OF SHAALOS SEUDOS AFTER ZMAN MINCHA

Seif 2 (Contd.) The Magen Avraham writes that if one starts Shaalos Seudos before theTime of Mincha, but the meal stretches and goes into the time of ShaalosSeudos, he is Yoitze Shaalos Seudos. The Elya Rabba, however, quotes the SeferChasidim which holds that a person cannot split a meal so that half of itshould be considered Shaalos Seudos. He holds that a full meal needs tobe eaten at the time when Shaalos Seudos may be eaten.

TIME OF SHAALOS SEUDOS

Seif 2The Ran writes that one may split up the morning meal by spreading a cloth on the bread, Bentching, then making Hamoitzie again. However, Tosfos and Rosh write that a person would not be Yoitze Shaalos Seudos unless he eats from the time of Mincha (six and a half hours after the beginning of the day).

ASHES IN THE INCENSE POT

To explain the case of the Gemara about an incence-burning-pot that have both wood and ash in it that you may move, we already brought the explanation of most Rishonim that the wood is Muktza and the ash is Heter, since they can be used for covering spit. The Rosh quotes the Ramban, that both the wood and ash were Muktza, but they're both insignificant and are Batul to the pot they're in. The Rambam says that the Heter of moving it is bec… Continue

WICK AND OIL LEFT IN A LAMP

The Gemara says that the people of Galil were forbidden to move the lamp that had the leftovers of a wick in it, since it was Bosis to it, though it also contained oil. Rashi explains that since linen was a rare commodity there and very expensive, the leftover wick was not inferior to the oil and therefore the lamp is Bosis to the wick. R' Tam says that they had linen, but oil was so plentiful, that it didn't have much value, therefore… Continue

WOOD THAT WAS BURNT TO ASH ON SHABBOS

The Magen Avraham writes that if the wood was burnt Friday night, and therefore the ash was created on Shabbos, it's Nolad (Muktza for something that comes into being on Shabbos.) Even though we usually do not hold of the Muktza Nolad, this is only where certain changes happen to an object. Then we still say it keeps it's original status of Heter. But by making ashes, which is a

BOSIS FOR BOTH HETER AND ISSUR

If an object is a base for Muktza and Heter, it doesn't have the status of Bosis. We see this in the Gemara about an incence-burning-pot that have both wood (Muktza) and ash (Heter, since they can be used for covering spit) is not Bosis and you may move it as is. The Rosh asks why don't you need to spill out the contents and gather the ash by itself to move it (like we say by the rock in the basket of fruit, that you need to dump out the co… Continue
