HISTORY IS NO MYSTERY

Torah is the common heritage of the Jewish people, all of Jewry stood united to receive the Torah (see Rashi Shemoth 19:2). The spirit of unity under Torah is reenacted every seven years with the Hakhal ceremony (Devarim 31:10-13). Every segment of the community committed to the Torah’s D-vine authority, consequently an eclectic approach would best serve at providing a complete understanding of a Torah concept. The Torah Devarim 32:8 teaches that at from the inception of humanity’s cultural div… Continue

YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN, FROM WHEREVER YOU ARE

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuva or Shabbat Teshuvah, the Sabbath of Return or alternatively Repentance. The widespread custom is for the Rav to address his congregation this Shabbat (See Mateh Efriam 602:41, Rav Schulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 429:4) Further it is interesting that the content of this speech has changed over time. Apparently on the Shabbat prior to Yom Kippur the Rabbi would discuss the applicable laws for the Succot holiday which closely fo… Continue

STANDING TOGETHER, EACH AT THEIR POST

The thought of what positive potential a New Year may bring as well as the longing to consign the present year to the archives has rarely been more pronounced than this year. Without touching any political or cultural issue that is part of the current scene, it is clear that when even fundamental values which have defined human society from its inception are up for debate if not disdain, humanity has reached a fork in the road. The choice appears to be between a path that draws out humanity’s D-… Continue

SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!!!!!!!!

The Torah commands one to include guardrails around the roof of the house one builds (Devarim 22:5). Biblically, one when building a residence needs to build a wall, barrier around the roof that is at least 40 inches high and be substantial enough to lean on. As the Scripture itself describes the rooftop barrier as an exhortation “. . . [D]o not place blood within your house, lest one falls (from the roof)” These are the 546th and 547th Mitzvoth and are codified at the very end of the Shulchan A… Continue

SHINING LIGHT IN THE DARK PLACES

“For David, L-RD You are my light and my salvation from who shall I fear?, L-RD You are the source of my life’s energy from who shall I be scared? ” so begins Psalm 27 recited twice daily throughout the Elul- Tishrei season the words are by themselves are inspiring but what does King David A’H mean? Light and darkness cannot co-exist. The Torah itself attests to this phenomenon (Bereshith 1:4) “ . . . [A]nd G-D separated between the light and the darkness” Where it is dark there is no light, co… Continue

I am convinced that this is a huge topic but it appears to be elusive. It's interesting that Avraham is told by HaShem to go to Eretz Yisroel whereas Moshe begs HaShem to allow him into Eretz Yisroel but HaShem denies him entry. Perhaps they are a "study in contrasts."

How about an update on Messhichistim in Habad and the opposition.
