A perfect result from being inquisitive
A man knocked on my door when I lived in London. He told me he was not orthodox. He was married in an orthodox shool but he was now a member of the reform synagogue. His mother had died and was being buried in an orthodox cemetery. Out of respect for her, he would like all the services at his home during shiva to be conducted by an orthodox minister. I agreed and I was able to go to his home every day. Naturally, as you would expect of me, I tried to find out, while chatting with him at his home, why he joined the reform but he would not tell me. All he would say was that it is a long story. About two months went by and I became very curious. I felt I had to know the reason. So I knocked on his door without giving any previous warning and he and his wife were stunned to see me. "Don't tell me that you still want to know the reason why I belong to the reform", he remarked. I replied that was the very reason I came to see you. He told me that he and his wife could not have children so after many years they adopted a non-Jewish baby girl. As they were non observant they did not bother to convert her. The orthodox synagogue would not bother with them so they joined the reform. They then were blessed with a child of their own - a boy. I could fill many pages with the rest of this story but after very many visits to their home and my encouragement and that of my wife, they were interviewed by the London Beth Din. I taught the girl for many years and she converted and the parents became observant members of my shool where I was the Chazan. For me, the greatest moment of this episode was after the girl's chuppa when both parents burst into tears and said "We are crying tears of joy but it could have been so easily tears of great sadness. We owe all this to you". When I think back this was all because I was being inquisitive after a shiva.
