Israeli government to reduce number of foreign nurses for elder-care

Talkback Post Haaretz- What a pity that the Israeli government doesn't realize what an improvement in quality of life is afforded the elderly when they have access to full time filipino nursing. The filipinos provide proper food, take them outside, and look after them reliably and with care, easing the burden on younger family members who would otherwise have to take time from work to care for their older relatives. How pathetic that the head of the committee designated to 'study' this, Trade and Labor Ministry official Ephraim Cohen, is quoted by Haaretz saying that "some of the elderly can make do with a part-time Israeli nurse and do not need a live-in nurse, a job that Israelis are less likely to do". The LAST thing that this country should be doing is to cut off the lifeline of it's elderly, by making it impossible to get affordable full-time help! Michoel@Chareidio.com

I spend a lot more of my time that I would wish dealing with this problem. From my experience, there is ample Israeli help (not enough English speakers though) to handle a lot of the people. (With unemployment close to nothing in many cities, this may not be true everywhere.) Also in my experience, the Phillipinos provide a better level of care. In any event, this being Israel, as soon as you make a loophole, everyone has to drive his truck through it. Bringing large number of foreign workers for domestic care creates problems of supervision, exploitation and crime. We also have to built churches and provide education for the foreign workers. There is a point where the needs need to be balance. The government bodies are not being vicious, they just have to make some very tough decisions.
