DON'T WISH UPON A STAR

12:29-31 exhorts Israel not to inquire after the modes of worship engaged in by the Idolatrous nations. Israel is told not to pursue these practices as G-D hates these practices characterizing them as abominations.

The Zera Shimshon ZT’L ZY’A poses a reasonable question , what practices is scripture speaking about? It is remote that in an era where Israel’s sovereignty over the land is total both physically and spiritually one would seek out forms of devolution that are outside the… Continue

TIME TO WANT TO GO HOME

Rashi ZT'L ZY'A offers one of his most intriguing commentaries in this week's Sidra. Devarim 11:18 recited twice daily as part of the daily Shema states "And you shall place these words upon your hearts and upon your souls, and you shall bind them for a sign on your arms and for frontlets between your eyes." This week Shabbat is also the eve of Tisha B’Av the anniversary of the Jerusalem Temples’ destruction from on top of Mount Moriah ,The Temple Mount symbolizing the loss of Jewish sovereignty. The juxtaposition of Parashat Devarim to the Ninth of Av is too intruging to leave unexplored.

AVOTH 2:7 CRAFTING A QUALITY LIFE

The Mishna offers a contrast which seems obvious. Indulgence in physical pursuits is essentially self-destructive whereas indulging in the spiritual generates positive and beneficial results.

The Tifereth Yisrael sees the Mishna as offering two parallel tracks. Each is progressive beginning with oneself and growing in sophistication Imagine one can grow from food and drink to being responsible for and dominating people who he cannot trust. On the other hand one can take an education… Continue
