DOWN AND GETING UP

The last season wholly belonging to the present year is the Three Weeks between the Fasts of 17 Tamuz and 9 Av, period between the breech of Jerusalem’s city walls and the destruction of the Temple.

AVOTH 6:6 WHAT COMES BEFORE THE 48 THINGS THAT AQUIRE TORAH

The Forty Eight things through which Torah is acquired is incomplete according to Rabbi Aaron Lieb Shtienman Shlita. Rabbi Shtienman notes the Mishna is missing something fundamental, one must be a Jew.



Even if a non-Jew were to follow the regimen set out in the Mishna and assiduously study,Torah will not be fully in one’s grasp. Certainly, the requirement of renouncing idolatry which the Talmud (Migila 13a) declares as the defining a Jew’s worldview.

AVOT 5:19 IT'S BETTER TO BE GOOD THAN LOOK GOOD

The contrast between Avraham Avini A’H and Bilam, the gentile prophet (see BaMidbar 22:2-24:25) is curious. The Torah has Bilam against Moshe Rabbainu A’H not Avraham.



Rabbi Ytzchak Luria, the ARI Z’L ZY’A, explains, both Moshe and Bilam were both partial reincarnations of Adam HaRishon’s son Hevel. Moshe being the realized potential Hevel had for good and Bilam, Hevel’s unresolved capacity for evil . So why compare Bilam to Avraham and not Moshe?

AVOT 4:14 TOTAL TORAH PERSONALITY

Rabbi Nahorai advises how to preserve the integrity of Torah as it passes

from one generation to the next. Torah cannot be learnt in a vacuum. One needs more than a teacher and colleagues one needs a Makom Torah, a Torah place.
