ASHES, A BARBECUE AND FAITH / PARAH,PESACH and EMUNAH

As Passover, Pesach approaches the season seems to overtake the weekly Parsha in the national consciousness. The additional reading for this Shabbat comes from BaMidbar 19:1-22 concerning the purification ritual performed with ashes from a Red Heifer.



Aside form being a notice for anyone rendered impure through contact with a corpse be able to complete their purification in time to participate in the Pesach sacrifice, purification and Pesach have more in common.

PRE-PESACH PURIM TORAH

The Kotzur Shulchan Atuch 142: 5 suggests it is appropriate to learn Torah before beginning the Purim Seudah/meal “To the Jews there was Light- this is Torah” (Esther 8:16, Talmud, Megila 16b).



The Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 429 requires the study of Passover’s laws should begin at least thirty days before the holiday i.e. On Purim. There are essentially two reasons why;

A BABY, A RIFLE, A JEW AND PARASHAT ZACHOR

The Shabbat prior to Purim even when the holiday is celebrated on the coming Friday is designated as Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat of remembrance. Devarim 25: 17-19 which calls upon Bene Yisrael to remember and never forget what Amelak did to the nation as they left Egypt Haman, being a scion of Amelak, sought to follow his ancestor’s genocidal ambitions only to have his plans thwarted by the A-mighty through the actions of Mordechai and Esther as described in Megilat Esther.
