GOING WITH AND BEING PART OF THE FLOW

The Talmud (Rosh HaShaashana 2a) teaches that the 15th of She vat is the New Year for trees. According to Rashi ZT’L ZY’A (14a) this is literally the trees’ new year when the sap begins flowing anew thus beginning the year’s produce.

Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Friedman ZT’L ZY’A in Lekutei Ma’riach ZT’L ZY’A citing Magen Avraham ZT’L ZY’A commenting on Orach Chaim 131 (note 16) that Ashkenazi (European) Jews have adopted the practice to celebrate the date with eating additional fruit in… Continue

FOUNDATIONS of Faith

Formally declaring the arrival of the New Moon by those responsible for ruling Bene Yisrael became the first commandment given to Bene Israel after what had been an extended family emerged as a nation. The commandment detailed in Shemoth 12:2 Has the First of Nisan set a new year, the first of a year’s months.

UNACCEPTABLE ACCEPTANCE

When does exile begin or end ? The mere physical location cannot be as significant as the psycho-emotional and spiritual aspects are explored. Therefore, Rabbi Meir of Permishlan ZY’A thought thinking exile is tolerable, an acceptance of the way things are… Continue

Therefore when reading the opening sidrot of Shemot recounting the Egyptian servitude and Exodus one should read the text on two levels first is the historic experience of Bene Yisrael and beyond that what lessons these events teach subsequent generations.

The Book of Shemot begins with informing the reader… Continue

THE TEAM & THE I: THE LESSON AND ESSENCE OF BEING A NATION

As Yaakov Avinu A’H took leave of his sons he called his sons to gather and hear what will be in the end of days (49:1). However, the next sentence has Yaakov seemingly repeating himself in calling his sons to collect themselves and listen to their father (see 49:2). Rashi ZT’L ZY’A (49:1) explains Yaakov wished to impart to his sons the Ketz, when will the dawn of the messianic era happen. However, G-D’s presence left Yaakov and he began to say other things.

The Talmud (Pesachim… Continue
