Rabbi Yisrael Zvi of Kasan ZT’L ZY’A would retell every year how the Sidra, BO was experienced in the Beit Medrash of Rav Moshe Lieb of Sassov ZT’L ZY’A. The Exodus recorded in Bo was so keenly felt that after the silent prayer was recited Friday night the Rebbe began to chant the Hallel (as is the Chassidic practice on the first night(s) of Passover). The series of praises were recited with deep emotion and intense joy. So caught up in the moment it was not until the worshippers filed out of… Continue

PEELING BACK THE COVERS

The sidra reads so dramatically that it is hard to remember that one is reading the word of G-D and not an adventure novel. The conflict between Moshe Rabbainu A’H and Pharaoh is so pointed it would not be hard to imagine the tension in royal chambers. Even more intriguing is what went on between the royal advisers, sorcerers and his majesty.

A central theme in the sidra is the first seven of the ten . Yet, as an introduction to the plagues G-D commanded Moshe to have his brother… Continue

HOW TO CONQUER GAZA

Reading the weekly Sidra it is proper to look for messages that answer questions, especially when it comes to understanding current events from a Torah based perspective.. This approach is not suggest by some pulpit rabbi trying to be timely and trendy but from Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Ladi, The Alter Rebbe ZTVK’L ZY’A. The first Rebbe of Chabad, the Alter Rebbe told his orphaned grandson the Zemach Zaddik ZY’A that “One should live with the times” an statement for a Chassidic leader as the… Continue

OVERCOME NOT OVERWHELMED

“And Yaakov lived in in the land of Egypt for seventeen years . . . .” Yaakov did not merely change his address he lived. The Zohar (I:216b) explains these years were free from the travail that had characterized the rest of Yaakov Avinu A’H ‘s life. So the connotation of Va’Ychi is not just and he lived but more like and he came to life, a life restored, renewed and revived. This becomes particularly interesting as this was Egypt a place not well known for embracing the values and beliefs… Continue

WHY WE FIGHT, WHY WE BELOG

Ya’akov Avinu A’H received an unexpected message from his returning sons when they arrived from Egypt. The possibility of Yossef still being alive was beyond belief. Only seeing an allusion to the last Torah class they had together did Yaakov believe the good news (see Bereshith 45:26-27 and Rashi ad loc)

Though finding out his beloved Yossef was alive and well in Egypt literally brought Yaakov back to life, he was concerned about leaving the… Continue
