Noach and Avraham: The Challenge of Transforming Materialism into Spirituality

ויאמר אלקים לנח קץ כל בשר בא לפני כי מלאה הארץ חמס מפניהם והנני משחיתם את הארץ, G-d said to Noach, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with robbery…

TO BUILD A BETTER WORLD; FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS

And this is the fashion by which you shall make it [the Ark]; the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. (Bereshith 6:15) G-D’s instruction to Noach how exactly to build the Ark is curious.G-D is informing Noach that society had become so degenerate it could no longer continue (see 6:.13) G-D commands Noach to build an Ark in 6:14. 6:18-21 and 7:1-4 has G-D’s direction what birds and animals are fit to be saved. As G-D tells… Continue

THE JOY OF BELONGING

Each holiday contains multiple themes however these are not conflicting notions but subsets of how the particular festival is cast in the liturgy. Sukkoth and Shmeni Atzeret /Sinchat Torah are characterized as Zmaan Simchatainu, “The Season of Our Rejoicing” Whether it is the joy of having survived the Days of Awe renewed in faith and dedication or the joy that even with one’s personal shortcomings one can enter the Succa and even if one is without Torah or Good Deeds, without either fragrance… Continue

FAITHFUL SHADE

“ [A] Succa above twenty cubits [approximately 40’[ is not valid though Rabbi Yehudah does approval . . . .” is how the Talmudic tractate Succa begins. Why this particular law while an interesting question, however as a generic question could be asked with variation throughout any given tractate so the validity of asking why begin the discussion with the law of a too tall Succa is minimal. Yet, Re’hya M’Hemna (Zohar III, 103b) declares “ . . . Whoever is in the secret of faith and descendant of… Continue

ATTITUDE for ATONEMENT

Yom Kippur as described in Scripture (VaYikrah 16) is observed on two levels, a Temple Service and an individual’s personal observance. Seforno (16:29) points out these two observances exist simultaneously.

The Temple Service is quite elaborate featuring the Cohain Gadol, the High Priest entering the Holy of Holies (16:13). Yom Kippur is the only day during the year when the High Priest was allowed to enter. Additionally the remainder of the Temple service is recorded for all time as… Continue
