Balak #2

Balak

In this week's parsha, Balak, the king of Moab, sends Bilaam (a prophet) as a messenger to curse the jews (22; 5-6). However, in the end he is stopped by the angel of Hashem (22;34) and blesses the jews instead (chapter 24).
However, why did Bilaam bless the jews? He wanted hated them!?!…

WHEN BAD PEOPLE HAVE GOOD IDEAS

Rabbi Nachman taught Chutzpah is effective even when directed towards Heaven for at first G-D told Bilam not to go with Balak’s first group of emissaries(BaMidbar 22:12) yet when Bilam asked again he was told (22:20) that he may indeed go. (Talmud Sanhedrin 105a)

Understanding Rabbi Nachman’s teaching is difficult as it appears contrary to what one might expect. The precise translation of chutzpah is so elusive that instead of a translation the term itself has become part of the… Continue

In this week's parsha Moshe commits the sin of hitting the rock instead of speaking to it (20;11).

However, what exactly is the difference between speaking and hitting the rock? They're both miracles!?! Why was hitting the rock such a big sin that caused Hashem to swear to never allow Moshe to enter the land of Israel (20;12)?

Additionally, how is the punishment of not being allowed… Continue

In this week's parsha Moshe commits the sin of hitting the rock which made him unable to enter the land of Israel.

The Rambam says that Moshe's sin of hitting the rock was anger. However, Rashi (20;12) says it was because he failed to scantily Hashem's name!?!

Rashi (20;10) relates that the word "hamorim" (meaning: rebellious) refers to people who instruct their teachers.

Rabbi Yochanan Zweig explains that most people think… Continue

OPERATION SCROLL SHIELD

The time had arrived for Bene Yisrael to be on the move. Till now the nation’s contacts with other peoples was limited. The first attempt at diplomacy after some Thirty Eight years would mark a turning point as a nation. After some Thirty Eight years in isolation how will Ben Yisrael relate to others? How will others react to Bene Yisrael? Indeed the time had arrived for Bene Yisrael to learn how to navigate amid the diversity of humanity.

As Bene Yisrael approached Edom emissaries… Continue

successfully handing it down to our children

Tips for handing down our heritage and faith

In regards to chinuch, many are mainly taught just what to do when practicing, but don't really understand or feel it inside. We need to know why to do it, so it's meaningful. For example, besides because it's our obligation, it's also food for our soul. It connects us to Ha-shem and also brings light to the world.

Plus, besides reverence, we should teach love for G-d. And people should be a good example of both…

Korach

In this week’s parsha, Korach gathers 250 court leaders and challenges Moshe's leadership. In line with expectation, the dispute ended by the earth opening its mouth and swallowing all of the complainers and their possessions.

Rashi (16;1) explains that Korach was jealous because Moshe had appointed Elizaphan the prince instead of him. Therefore, Korach formed a rebellion against Moshe in attempt to gain the high status he felt he deserved (Korach thought: Amram… Continue

HIGHER CALLING

Korach stands out as the paradigm of one who leads a controversy not for the sake of Heaven (see Avoth 5:17). Yet remarkably Rashi ZT’L ZY’A commenting on 16:7 offers an elaborate justification for Korach’s actions. Rashi prefaces his remarks by observing that Korach was renowned as a clear thinker. Therefore, his challenge to Moshe A’H authority seems at the very least contrary to self…

Great message for couples

I was reading about a certain marriage issue and the article had a good point. I won't say the story, but the lesson.

Life is so busy with work and kids etc. Many couples don't spend enough time with each other, and their

small problems with each other just grow.

The first step is both have to be willing to improve things. Sometimes, in a generally okay marriage, the problem might be that the couple doesn't communicate enough. Either it's hard for them, or they're…

SELF INTEREST NATIONAL DISASTER

Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato ZT’L ZY’A says towards the end of Chapter 11 of Mesilath Yesharim based on the Zohar 158a that the spies’ sin was rooted in their concern that when Bene Yisrael enters the land they would their office of leadership.

The Zohar discusses at length that the spies’ concern overrode their prior level of piety. Losing their station as leaders was more important than national fulfillment by settling the Land of Israel. Living in a tent in the desert was preferred… Continue
