A Call to Normalcy

Whenever I bring my family to the East Coast, they pick up little nuances from the observant Jews of the New York area. “The counselor said I should take two dollars and pick myself up a nawmal swim cap,” my six-year-old daughter told me. Somehow in a NY accent, the word “normal” contains subtleties of implication we don’t have in the Midwest. It seems that lots of observant Jews place an importance on keeping the status quo and not doing anything unusual. Normal means keeping the status quo.… Continue

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Behaaloscha 5768

Shabbos in the Parashah

In this week’s parashah the Torah records that Moshe requested from his father-in-law, Yisro, that he continue journeying with the Jewish People. It is said (Bamidbar 10:29-33) vayomer Moshe liChovav ben Reuel haMidiani chosen Moshe nosim anachnu el hamakom asher amar HaShem oso etain lachem lecho itanu viheitavnu loch ki HaShem diber tov al Yisroel, vayomer eilav lo eileich ki im el artzi viel moladiti… Continue

A History of the Shechinah

Lately I have started praying for something new. I still pray for good health, for my children, for peace in Israel, and for parnossa — but I now realize that it really all comes down to one thing. I have started praying for the Shechinah. I realize that when G-d rests His Presence upon us, life begins to work. All the blessings that were somehow hidden from the eye become revealed. Life is smoother, happier and full of peace. We need peace in our lives, in our homes and in our country. We need… Continue

AVOTH 1:8 IT IS HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME

Rabbi Yehuda ben Tabi’s exhortation that one should not arrange judgment. The Tiferth Yisrael ZY’A on the Mishna describes an advisor who assists a litigant in organizing his testament for greatest effect. While not lying outright, person spoken of is so deft at manipulating facts to advance someone’s cause so that what results is not a lie but not quite the truth. Maimonidies’ takes this theme a step further, the concern is that the arranging facts goes past assisting one in advocacy to… Continue

Some thoughts on the BESHET

As Shavous is the Yahrziet of Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov ZTVK’L ZY’A it is appropriate to mention some about him and the Chassidic movement he led.

Maybe his most enduring teaching is that “the whole is filled with His glory” is no abstract concept. G-D is very near and very concerned with the most minute details of His creation. He is always there and involved. This is something that on some level is available to every Jew not just the scholars but each person… Continue

Shabbos: Taam HaChaim Naso-Shavuos 5768

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Naso-Shavuos 5768

Shabbos in the Parashah

This week’s parashah is Parashas Naso and is followed immediately by the festival of Shavuos. The commentators traditionally link the parashah to the adjoining festival, so we will follow this approach and discuss the parashah and the festival of Shavuos. In Parashas Naso the Torah discusses the law that requires that people who have contracted various impurities must be sent out from the camp. It is said… Continue
