Baal Peor - Why Doesnt G-d React?

I already posted this in the old forums but since it is so fundamental and I want to add something I am posting it again.

Where is G-d? If the Torah is really the laws of the Creator why don’t we see him actively punishing wrong doers and sinners?

In Parshas Balak the Jews fell into the horrible sin of worshiping the idol Baal Peor. The purpose of its worship was to express the idea that there are no laws or values which one is obligated or required to follow. Consequently… Continue

FOOD MUKTZA

SEIF 2 (CONTINUED)

FOOD MUKTZA

The Rambam writes that R' Shimon holds there is no Muktza for food besides dried figs and raisins. Food that are put away to be used as merchandise or put away in storage are not Muktza. The Tosfos Shabbos explains: Though they're set aside not to be eaten, still, the owner doesn't conclusively decide never to eat it, but he would partake in it if needed.

The same applies to kernels of wheat that are planted, that they're not Muktza (as… Continue

DRIED FIGS AND RAISINS

SEIF 2 (CONTINUED)

DRIED FIGS AND RAISONS

R' Shimon agrees that figs and grapes that are left to dry out are Muktza. Since they have both conditions of Muktza, that you personally pushed them away from use plus they became inedible in the meanwhile. Other fruit that are left to dry out are not Muktza, though you personally left them to dry, they never become inedible while drying out. Dates that fell off the tree before they're ripe (and became ripe on Shabbos,) are not… Continue

Muktza Simon 310 post 1 WOOD THAT YOU HANG MEAT AND FISH ON

SEIF 1

WOOD THAT YOU HANG MEAT AND FISH ON

Rav said that wood that you hang meat on is not Muktza, but those you hang fish on are Muktza. The Rif and Rosh explain the reason because it's Muktza Machmas Mius (because they're disgusting.) Therefore we, that Paskin like R' Shimon that doesn't hold that utensils are just because they're disgusting, would hold even those that hang fish are not Muktza.

The Rambam Paskins that the fish ones are Muktza. The Magid Mishna… Continue

CARRYING A CHILD WITH A ROCK IN HIS HAND

A father can carry his son that has a longing him (and might get sick if he doesn't hold him,) even if he has a rock in his hand. (The Tosfos Shabbos says this Heter only applies in a R'Shus Hayachid but not in a R'shus Harabim. Carrying the child would be as tantamount as carrying the rock.)

Rashi explains the Heter that the Rabanan allowed the moving of Muktza indirectly (not holding it with his hands) when it…

WALKING WITH A YOUNG CHILD

A woman is allowed to hold the hand of her child to help him walk in a R'Shus Harabim. As long as the child puts down one foot and lifts the other foot. It's prohibited to drag him with both feet down. The Ran says that a child that too young to walk, you're Chayiv if you drag him. We don't say that a human carries himself (live weight) by such a child. Rabeinu Yeruchim holds it's only a rabbinical Issur. The Magen Avraham says the Nafka Mina… Continue

RAW MEAT

The Gemara in Shabbos 128a says Rav Huna permits moving raw meat and Rav Chisda prohibits it. Rav Chisda admits that raw fowl is permitted since one can eat it raw. Rashi explains Rav Huna that the reason why raw meat is permitted, because it's edible raw. The Tur says because it's able to be fed to dogs.

RAW FISH

Salty fish is permitted to move, because it's edible but raw fish is prohibited. Rashi explains, though it's…

STONE ON TOP OF A BARREL

The Mishna in Shabbos 142b: a stone put on top of a barrel, you need to tip it over to throw off the stone before you move the barrel. The Gemara says that's only if you forgot the stone on top, but if you left it there on purpose, the barrel is forbidden to be moved because it becomes a Bosis (base) for Muktza.

Why don't we say that the stone becomes a cover to the barrel since it's designated to be one? The Rashba says…

A SANDAL WITH A BROKEN STRAP

A sandal used to have two straps on either side that you tie the lace through. If the inner one broke, then it's still a utensil, since you can fix it. Since the stitching would be in between ones feet it wouldn't be noticeable. But if the outer strap broke, so the stitching would be where everyone could see it, it's not a utensil anymore, so it can't be moved. This is if it broke in a courtyard, since it's safe there.

If it…

DOORS OF UTENSILS THAT FELL OFF

Shabbos 122b - All doors that fell off of utensils, even if it fell off before Shabbos, it's permitted to move. Tosfos brings the Gemara on 124b that by broken utensils that it's permitted to move even though it broke on Shabbos. This would seem to contradict each other. Is it a reason to permit it more if it broke before Shabbos or after Shabbos?

Tosfos answers that by the doors, since they are ready to do their regular…

A NON-MUKTZA ITEM ON TOP OF A FORBIDDEN UTENSIL

The Gemara in Shabbos 124a says that it is prohibited

to move a mortar (a bowl for grinding) unless it

contains garlic. What is the nature of this Heter? The

Rosh explains that it's the same as using a loaf of

bread or a child in order to move a dead body on

Shabbos.

Though a dead body is Muktza, in order to move it to a

place where it won't decompose quickly, the Rabanan

allowed… Continue

HAKDAMA (INTRO.) THE REASONS FOR MUKTZA

The Rambam gives 3 reasons why the Torah enacted

Muktza:

1) In order to make it more "Shabbosdik". Just as one

should not speak or walk in the same way as during the

week, so too, one should not move objects the same

way.

2) If one is going to move a lot of objects

(especially those types of objects which are used

mainly to do things that are forbidden on Shabbos) one

may come to do Malacha on… Continue

Welcome to Rav Chaim's Blog

As an introduction to my coming Blog(s) I would like to introduce my Torah goals for them. As you may be aware of my years of activity on the GY, I recently started a Forum on going into the Sugya behind the P'sakim of the Mishan Brurah. This is my goal on my other Blog, limudtorah.jewishweb.org.

I think it's very important for people to set up goals in their learning. I think understanding Mishna Brurah is a major accomplishment in both… Continue
