דורש טוב: שבועות תשס"ט
Doreish Tov Shavuos 5769
The holiday of plenty
Introduction
The holiday we are celebrating is referred to as Shavuos, which means weeks. While in the simple sense the holiday is thus called because of the seven weeks of the counting of the Omer that precede the holiday, we must understand why the holiday itself is referred to as Shavuos. Rashi (Yechezkel 45:21) writes that Pesach is referred to as Shavuos because it is on Pesach that we begin to…

Rav Yossef especially observed the holiday of Shavouth with a particularly festive meal explaining that were it not for that day when G-D give the Torah to Bene Yisrael I would be no different than any the other Yossefs who occupy the marketplace. Rashi ZT’L ZY’A elaborates The Rav Yossef was expressing gratitude because through learning Torah he became distinguished from all others. After all, there are many folks named Yossef who spend their days in the marketplace and how am I any different…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Parashas Bamidbar 5769
Peace through the actions of the wicked
Introduction
This week I was discussing with a friend of mine the name of the leader of the tribe of Shimon, Shlumiel Ben Tzurishaddai, whose name is mentioned in this week’s parashah (Bamidbar 2:12). I mentioned that the Ohr HaChaim (Bamidbar 7:36) writes that one possible reason that he was thus called was because his name alludes to the fact that…

Events , especially major happenings deserve preparation. There was no more monumental event in the course of human experience than the Law Giving on Mt. Sinai on Shavout. Receiving the Torah made G-D’s will accessible to humankind possible and the birthright of all Jewry. To prepare for this .auspicious holiday a collection of Tanaic teachings that extol the virtues of Torah study are read as a”sixth” chapter to Pirkei Avot and is called Perek Kinyan Torah, [the]Chapter on Acquiring the…

The downward spiral whose consequences are the curses expressed in the rebuke (VaYikra 26:14-46) begins with a cessation of Amaluth B’Torah, toiling in Torah. Rashi ZT’L ZY’A in 26:15 lists what happens No Learning leads to a failure to observe which in turn leads to a sense of disdain for those who observe which leads to hatred of the scholars which leads to preventing others from observing which in turn leads o a denial of the Commandments’ D-vine origin which wings up as a denial of G-D…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Parashas Behar-Bechukosai 5769
Sustenance Torah and Shabbos
Introduction
In the difficult economic times that are currently prevalent, it is worth noting that this week’s parasha provides the solution. It is said (Vayikra 26:3) im bichukosai teileichu, if you will follow My decrees. Rashi quotes the Toras Kohanim that interprets this verse to mean, “if you toil in Torah,” then you will receive all the…

Reflections of a Sad Reality: The Israeli Government during the Visit of Pope Benedict XVI
On behalf of the millions of our brothers and sisters who were slaughtered in the name of Christianity, we do not welcome Pope Benedict XVI to the Holy Land
Chaim Twerski 12/05/2009 15:19
No, he is not welcome here and we do not wish to receive him. The most powerful man in the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI is landing in Israel today and the insane disruptions in all systems that defy…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Parashas Emor 5769
Sticking together
Introduction
In this week’s parasha, the Torah informs us of the man who was a son of an Egyptian man and a Jewish woman, who blasphemed using the Name of HaShem. This man was sentenced to death by stoning. The Medrash (Toras Kohanim) states that the background of this incident was that this man sought to pitch his tent in the encampment of the tribe of Dan, and he was informed…

Pesach Sheni, the Second Passover celebrated on 14 Iyar is commonly seen as the holiday of second chances. A simple reading of the text in BaMidbar 9:1-14 leaves the impression that this new Mitzvah was promulgated in response to peoples’ complaint. Evidently when commanded to celebrate Passover on the Exodus’ first anniversary several could not because they were Tamei, ritually impure. So it would seem the Second Pesach was an officially sanctioned do-over or make-up.
The Nativ…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Parashas Acharei –Mos-Kedoshim 5769
Honoring ones parents and Shabbos
Introduction
In this week’s parasha, Kedoshim, it is said (Vayikra 19:3) ish imo viaviv tirau vies Shabsosai tishmoru ani HaShem Elokeichem, every man: your mother and father shall you revere and My Shabbosos shall you observe – I am HaShem, your G-d. Why is the mitzvah of observing Shabbos juxtaposed to the mitzvah of fearing ones…
