I ask myself regularly if I really want to be holy.
In the year 1930 the Chofetz Chaim traveled to Vilna.
He went to speak in the oldest and most central Shul in Vilna. In honor of the Gadol HaDor all the candles were lit and the tall beams that held up the roof were ornately decorated. The hand carved Aron HaKodesh was brilliantly polished. A half-hour before the scheduled talk the Shul was already completely full. The saintly rabbi stood radiantly at the pulpit and made…

The Eastern gates to the Courtyard of the Beis HaMikdash in Jerusalem were called “Shaarei Nikoner” or the gates of Nikoner. They were beautiful bronzed structures that greeted the guests as they arrived from all over the land.
Why are they called “Gates of Nikoner”? Nikoner was a Greek general during the Hashmonean era. When Antiochus’s nephew decided to remodel the Beis HaMikdash, he used his resources to import artifacts from the best craftsmen in…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Shevii Shel Pesach 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
This Shabbos is Shevii Shel Pesach, the seventh day of Pesach. Although the festival of Pesach is one long eight-day holiday, the seventh day of Pesach bears its own uniqueness. What is so special about the seventh day of Pesach? Rashi quotes the Medrash that states that the Jewish People were liberated from Egypt on the fifteenth of Nissan, which is the first day of Pesach, and on the twenty-first of…

What if one knew the world one knew was ending tomorrow how would one behave? What if one experienced an event so profound that any neutral observer would be affected so fundamentally that the notion of life altering would be a woefully inadequate description. Then again how would one know the significance of the events one lives through?
Questions like this come up in connection with the last day of Passover. The concluding day of the festival in Eretz Yisrael is called “the Seventh…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Acharei Mos-Shabbos HaGadol-Pesach 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
In this week’s parashah, Acharei Mos, we read about the passing of Nadav and Avihu, the two elder sons of Aharon HaKohen. The Mishna Berura (O. C. 621:2 quotes the Zohar that states that one who cries upon hearing this passage in the Torah describing the deaths of Nadav and Avihu will be granted atonement for his sins and his children will not die in his lifetime. One must wonder what is…

Traditionally, the loss of a Torah leader is characterized as “Our Crown Has Fallen”
The Passing of the Rosh HaYeshiva ZT’L ZY’A exemplifies this concept. While the Successor Roshei Yeshiva Rabbis Harris and Grunblatt are without a doubt faithful stewards of the Yeshiva’s legacy however, a seed change has taken place, the Yeshiva will no longer be the same.
To claim a particularly close relationship with the Rosh HaYeshiva or how the Rosh HaYeshiva was a second father and the…

While visiting London last year, I heard the following story from a 19 year old Jewish girl who was vacationing in a beach house in Thailand when the Tsunami hit. Within moments she was underwater.
Running on pure adrenaline she tried to get her head above water but couldn’t. The debris that was floating on the water prevented her from lifting her head to breathe air. As she desperately looked for a break in the debris, she realized that she was going to die. Her life, her family,…

A very dramatic paragraph recited during the Seder Proclaims in part
In each generation they stand to annihilate us
But, The Holy Blessed is He Saves us from them
The Haggada’s author wishes to convey G-D’s promise of deliverance made to Avraham Avinu (Bereshith 15:13-14) was not meant for one time but all time. The Zera Shimshon ZTV’L asks why does the text use generations and not nations? After all, some places in the Diaspora were better than others. Yet the…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Metzora 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
In this week’s parashah the Torah continues to discuss the laws of one who is afflicted with tzaraas, the biblical version of leprosy. Yet, this affliction defies our imagination, as we are not witnesses to such an affliction in our times. The Ramban (Vayikra 13:47) writes that tzaraas was only prevalent when the Jewish People were on the level that even a slight sin would be borne out by a manifestation of…

For the children of Israel are servants to Me; they are My servants, whom I took out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord, your God. (Vayikra 25:55)
Rav Yitzchak Blazer explains that Hashem took us out of Egypt so that we would be his servants by being constantly involved in learning Torah and doing mitvoth. This is the reason why Hashem made the Torah so vast and the Mitvoth so many.
Pesach is a time when we should all strive to become servants to our Creator. This is no…

In this week’s parsha we learn about the diagnosis and treatment of “tzoraas” (a leprous disease, which one would suffer because of some moral failing) by a kohen. The kohen might observe a whitish sore on the person’s skin, and, if he diagnosed it as “tzoraas”, he would declare the person “tamei” (inadequately translated as “unclean” or “impure"). In general, the whiter the sore, and the larger the area it covered, the more “tamei” the person would be; but—and here is a remarkable thing—once…

In The Midrash Says on Vayikra, in Parshas Tazria (page 119 in my edition), there is an interesting discussion of Bris Mila following an explanation by Rabbi Akiva, that explains that on the day of the great and final Judgement, Avraham Avinu will be stationed at the entrance to Gehinnom ... and will not permit that anyone with a Bris Milah be sent to Gehinnom.
It continues with an explanation that for hardened sinners who had a Bris Mila, that Avraham will remove the foreskins of…

Depending on who and when you ask the Jewish year either begins in the month of Tishrei, at Rosh Hashanah time, or a couple of weeks before Pesach in Nissan.
Why do we have two new years?
The answer lies in the season of each New Year. Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah occur in the fall when the trees are becoming bare, the sun is shining less and the harvest is coming to a close. There is a certain spirituality implicit in this season of autumn. When the physical world is in…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Tazria 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
This week many of us heard words of inspiration from Torah leaders regarding the tragic massacre that occurred recently at Yeshivas Mercaz HaRav in Yerushalayim. We know that on Shabbos one is prohibited from mourning publicly and one is forbidden to cry on Shabbos. Yet, it is worth taking a closer look inside this week’s parashah for a lesson that we can all glean from this shocking episode. It is said (Vayikra 12:1-2)…

The 21st Mitzvah in the Torah is to Tell The Story Of The Exodus. Shemot 13:8 “And you shall tell your son on that day it is because of this did G-D do for me when I left Egypt” Rashi ZT’L in his commentary explains the Elder is relating to the next generation that through obedience to G-D’s commandments the Pesach Sacrifice, Matzo and the Bitter Maror did G-D perform the miraculous events surrounding the Exodus.
Maimonides in his code of Jewish Law, Yad Chazakah , Laws of Chametz…
