Performing HaShem’s will with our will

Introduction

This week’s parashah discusses the karbanos, sacrifices that the Jewish People were required to bring when the Mishkan and the Bais HaMikdash were in existence. The essence of a sacrifice is the ratzon, the will that one has when offering the sacrifice to HaShem. It is said (Vayikra 1:3) im olah karbano min habakar zachar tamim yakrivenu el… Continue

REAL SHALOM

The sacrificial service discussed in VaYikra is the second of the three pillars upon which the world rests along with Torah and acts of kindness (Avot 1:2). The Hebrew word for sacrifice is Korban, a variant on the word Karov , close. So conceptually a sacrifice is the means for drawing close to G-D. At first the notion that to draw close to G-D another creature would need to die seems quite disturbing. Yet, bringing sacrifices is such an important place in the Torah based world view that it is… Continue

Returning to the level of Divine Presence of the Patriarchs on our tents

Introduction

This week’s parashah discusses the actual construction of the Mishkan and we also read Parashas HaChodesh, which discusses the Exodus from Egypt. The Ramban writes in his introduction to the Book of Shemos that this Book is called Sefer HaGeulah, the Book of Redemption, because of… Continue

BROTHERS

The connection between the Sidra and the Haggadah is fascinating in its implications for understanding the dynamics of Jews between themselves and as a community.

The sidra begins “And Moshe assembled the whole congregation of Bene Yisrael and said to them those things that G-D commanded that be done” (Shemot 35:1). The Ramban ZT’L ZY’A points out the command to build the Tabernacle symbolized the reconciliation between Israel and G-D in the aftermath of the Golden… Continue

Yetziat Mitzrayim - how to break free of your limitations

Moses is given his charge to free the Children of Israel from their bondage in Egypt. He sets off on his mission and doesn't get very far at the first shot. In fact his arrival on the scene makes things a lot worse for the Israelite slaves. As we turn our attention towards Pesach, it's worth reflecting on how their journey to freedom is played out on an individual level throughout our lives.

As a response to the demand to "…
