Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Shemini-Parah 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
This week we read Parashas Parah, which discusses the laws of one who became defiled through corpse tumah and undergoes a purification process by having the ashes of the Parah Adumah, the Red Heifer, sprinkled on him. The Medrash (Pesikta Dirav Kahana 4:1) points out the paradox that lies within this statute. On the one hand, the person who was tamei, impure, becomes purified through the Parah Adumah, and on the…

We are waiting for the Shechina to come down. It’s not happening!
What can we do?
“And it came to pass on the eighth day of inauguration of the Mishkan”
Six Parshios and at least 12 difficult tractates of the Talmud are dedicated to getting us ready for this great moment. There were so many things that we needed to know. How do we build the Mishkan? What are its dimensions, what materials,…

As Passover, Pesach approaches the season seems to overtake the weekly Parsha in the national consciousness. The additional reading for this Shabbat comes from BaMidbar 19:1-22 concerning the purification ritual performed with ashes from a Red Heifer.
Aside form being a notice for anyone rendered impure through contact with a corpse be able to complete their purification in time to participate in the Pesach sacrifice, purification and Pesach have more in common.
Both the…

They had to move the king's crown from town to town but they were worried about potential thieves. Ingeniously they decided to place the crown in the back of a simple wagon and cover it with tattered rags. This way, no one would even think it was there.
The light of Purim is even greater than the light of Yom Kippor. Because the light is so great, Chazal needed to find ways to hide it from the satan. This is why we do strange things not found on any other holidays like dressing up…

Toras Purim
(This can be confused at times with Purim Torah)
Introduction in lieu of a prelude
Well, once again we face the daunting task of writing Toras Purim, the only authentic Divrei Torah on Purim. How can this be, you wonder? Is all the Divrei Torah that we read regarding Purim not genuine? To answer that question, we have to explore the concept of copyright. We all know that when someone puts something into print, that automatically renders the work copyright.…

When Adar comes we increase in Simcha!
The people of Israel are still in mourning over the tragic murder of eight of our purest souls. Mothers in Sderot and now in Ashkelon are not sleeping or eating as they wait for the next bomb to drop. We hear about it on the news, we read about it in the paper, we may even know the stories of some of the victims whose lives have been torn apart….yet I can’t even imagine the…

5. Who should perform the mitzvah of seperating Challa ?
Although the main obligation is on the owner of the dough, i.e. the husband, the Sages gave the privilege of performing this mitzvah to the woman. Together with the other two mitzvos, family purity and kindling the Shabbos…

The Kotzur Shulchan Atuch 142: 5 suggests it is appropriate to learn Torah before beginning the Purim Seudah/meal “To the Jews there was Light- this is Torah” (Esther 8:16, Talmud, Megila 16b).
The Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 429 requires the study of Passover’s laws should begin at least thirty days before the holiday i.e. On Purim. There are essentially two reasons why;
- First the laws of this holiday are extensive and complex and annual review is necessary. Secondly, by…

I found this email from a friend too important a lesson not to share with everyone.
This is what Rav Lazer Brody posted about one of the students killed in Merkaz HaRav. It is an unbelievable story:
Doron: Story of a True Tzaddik
Doron Mahareta of blessed and saintly memory HY"D was one of the eight Yeshiva students that were massacred last week in Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav in Jerusalem.
Last night, I paid a shiva (condolence) call to Doron's…

The Shabbat prior to Purim even when the holiday is celebrated on the coming Friday is designated as Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat of remembrance. Devarim 25: 17-19 which calls upon Bene Yisrael to remember and never forget what Amelak did to the nation as they left Egypt Haman, being a scion of Amelak, sought to follow his ancestor’s genocidal ambitions only to have his plans thwarted by the A-mighty through the actions of Mordechai and Esther as described in Megilat Esther.

Remember how you felt when you first heard that Yeshiva students from Merkaz HaRav were brutally murdered last week in Jerusalem? Have you calmed down?
Tens of young boys just returned from the Kotel where they went to recite the Yom Kippur Kattan prayers. They were sitting down for their festive Rosh Chodesh meal, or they went to the library to catch up on their learning and these innocent angels were ruthlessly…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Vayikra-Zachor 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
This week is Parashas Zachor, when we read aloud how Amalek, the archenemy of the Jewish People, sought to infiltrate the Jewish camp and they were defeated by Yehoshua and the Jewish army. We read Parashas Zachor prior to Purim as Haman, the enemy of the Jewish People in Persia, was a descendant of Agag, the Amalekite king. The commentators point out that for all practical purposes, the true Amalekite does not exist…

ONLY IN ISRAEL A friend of a friend shared this...Only in Israel!
Every morning I take the 35 bus line to work. It's a quick ride and usually takes no more than 12 minutes. The third stop after I get on by the shuk is directly in front of Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav. This morning I found myself a bit anxious, unsure of what I was going to see as we passed by. As I looked around, I saw death notices pasted all over the street and flowers that had been brought lined the entrance to the…

Adar Sheini 5768 - March 7, 2008
Dear Friends,
Happy Rosh Chodesh Adar. May this month bring us all much joy, simcha and much healing for Am Yisroel.
Last year, just before Purim, we had great success lifting the spirits of many burn victims in the outpatient clinic of Hadasah Hospital on Mt. Scopus.
Again this year the Chaya Malka Burn Foundation, Inc. is giving PURIM GIFT BAGS filled with Yummy Treats and our CD to burn victims for the 4th…

God instructs Moshe that when he takes the census of the Israelites, they must be numbered indirectly: every man will give half a shekel, and the money thus collected will be counted. This is so that no plague will break out among them (Exod. 30: 11-13).
Rashi explains that the plague would come from the “ayin hora” (evil eye) which would result from a direct count of the Israelites.
In general, we are supposed to avoid counting things…

Shabbos: Ta’am HaChaim Pekudei-Shekalim 5768
Shabbos in the Parashah
This week’s parashah discusses the actual construction of the Mishkan and its completion. Additionally, this week is Parashas Shekalim and Rosh Chodesh Adar Sheinei. There is a very interesting association between all these dates and events. The Gemara (Megillah 13b) states that since HaShem knew that Haman would offer Achashveirosh ten thousand talents of silver as a price to be allowed to annihilate world Jewry,…
