Lech Lecha #4

Lech LechaThe torah (14;14) refers to Avraham's disciples in which joined him at war to rescue Lot as "chanichav."Rashi (14;14) states that the word "chinuch" (commonly translated as "education") stems from the word "chanichav" and means "the beginning of the entry of a person or an implement into a craft in which he/it is destined to stay."Rabbi Yochanan Zweig explains from here that real chinuch isn't about teaching children and telling them what they should do. Rather, chinuch is about…See More

Bereishis #5

Bereishis The Gemara (Sotah, 14a) states that the torah both begins and ends with chesed (kindness) as in the beginning Hashem clothed Adam/Eve and in the end He buried Moshe. However, why is it such a big deal that Hashem did chesed in both the beginning and in the end of the torah? There's a big gap in between those 2 places in the torah! If the Gemara sought to prove that chesed is important (as we find it in both the beginning and the end of the torah) then why did it use those 2 specific…See More

Simchas Torah

Simchas Torah"Simchas Torah" literally means "happiness of torah." However, shouldn't the holiday be called "our happiness with the torah"!?! Additionally, why is this specific time of year called our time of happiness? Furthermore, the Zohar describes the day of one's death to the day of a wedding. However, a wedding is a happy occasion whereas death is a negative!?!Lastly, what exactly is the definition of happiness? The Gemara (Sukkah, 28a) states that Hillel had 80 students and the greatest…See More

In this week's parsha Lot hosts 2 strangers in his house (19;3).

The torah (19;4) then relates that all the people of the city began complaining

(see Rashi, 19;4).

Lot then responded (19;8): "See now, I have two daughters who have never known a

man. I shall bring them out to you and you may do to them what is good in your

eyes; but to these men do nothing inasmuch as they have come under the shelter

of my roof."

Rashi (19;8)… Continue

“And Abraham said: “Because I thought, surely the fear of G-d is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife’s sake” (Bereishis, 20;11).

The question is: How can Abraham blame the people of Gerar for not fearing Hashem? It’s not one of the 7 laws of Noah!?! Why were they punished?!?

Rabbi Yochanan Zweig explains that there’s a connection between chesed (kindness) and fearing Hashem. In the beginning of the Parsha, Hashem…
